Powerball jackpot grows ahead of Saturday drawing

After no one matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing, the Powerball prize increased from $850 million to $925 million.

Powerball jackpot

The big picture: It’s the ninth-highest lottery reward in US history and the fourth jackpot of 2023 to break the top ten list of richest Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots.

Larger payouts—and fewer jackpot winners—have become the norm in recent years, when the two lotteries made the games more difficult to win and more appealing to play.

The drawing on Wednesday was the 30th straight drawing in this jackpot run. According to a lottery press release, the most recent Powerball jackpot was won on July 19.

The cash option for the drawing on Saturday, September 30 has been increased to $432.4 million.

In October 2015, Powerball made the game more difficult to win by introducing more white balls into the mix. In 2017, Mega Millions modified its regulations and odds.

Changes to both lotteries were made to increase the number of available number combinations, making winning less likely.
Lower odds of winning have resulted in greater jackpots with larger payouts, causing more individuals to purchase lottery tickets in the hopes of winning.

The winning numbers in Wednesday’s drawing were 1, 7, 46, 47 and 63 with a red Powerball of 7.

Did anyone win the Powerball Wednesday?

The latestWhile there wasn’t a jackpot winner from Wednesday’s drawing, there were more than 1.8 million winning tickets across the country, Powerball said in a release.

How to play Powerball lottery

Lottery players can choose six numbers from two independent pools of numbers: five different numbers ranging from 1 to 69 (the white balls) and one number ranging from 1 to 26 (the red Powerball).

Tickets marked “Quick Pick” or “Easy Pick” can also be purchased, with numbers chosen at random.

Powerball tickets cost $2 each, but for an additional $1 per play, you can add the Power Play option, which allows you to “multiply non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times.”

The multiplier number is chosen at random right before each drawing.
According to Powerball, the Match 5 prize with Power Play is always $2 million.
According to the lottery, the 10X multiplier is only in effect when the announced prize annuity is $150 million or less.

According to Powerball, the cut-off times are usually one to two hours before the drawing.
