Powerball jackpot swells to $835 million ahead of next drawing

The next Powerball drawing will take place on Wednesday night, with an estimated $835 million prize up for grabs.

According to a press release from Powerball, the prize pool is the fourth-largest in the history of the American lottery game and the second-largest this year.

The big prize, which is worth $390.4 million in cash, surpassed the $800 million level after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn on Monday night. According to Powerball, four tickets—three purchased in Florida and one in Oregon—matched all five white balls to win $1 million jackpots.

The last jackpot was won on July 19, when a California ticket matched all five white balls and the red Powerball to win $1.08 billion. There have been 29 straight draws without a jackpot winner since then.

The money can be taken as an instant cash lump sum or in 30-year increments spread over 29 years for jackpot winners. Federal and state taxes are not included in either of the listed prize selections.

According to Powerball, the jackpot rises based on game sales and interest, but the odds of winning the big prize remain the same: 1 in 292.2 million.

Powerball tickets are $2 and are available in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET, the Powerball drawing is aired live from the Florida Lottery Draw Studio in Tallahassee. The draws are also broadcast live on Powerball.com.
